KATHMANDU: Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the President of Sri Lanka, has fled the country. Rajapaksa, who was hiding in Sri Lanka, fled the country on Tuesday night after the public seized the President’s office and residence.

According to international media reports, he fled to Male, the Maldives’ capital, on a military plane. Along with President Rajapaksa, his brother, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, also left the country for the United States.

The Rajapakse family’s long rule in Sri Lanka has come to an end with Rajapakse’s escape.

Protesters in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, are ecstatic that President Rajapaksa has fled.

President Rajapaksa had previously stated that he would resign today. On July 30, Sri Lanka will also elect a new president.
