Study of endangered Tilung language started in Halesi Tuwachung

KATHMANDU: The endangered Tilung language is being taught in Khotang’s Halesi Tuwachung Municipality. The Bal Bikash Primary School Pipchahi in Chyasmitar, Municipality-3, has begun teaching.

Mayor Bimala Rai stated that the school has begun teaching elective subjects in Tilung language beginning with class 1 in the current academic session.

Tilung Rai Bugakim, with the assistance of the municipality, has created a textbook for the teaching of Tilung. According to Mayor Rai, Tilung language instruction will begin at the Pipaltar Bal Bikash Primary School in Chyasmitar during the current academic year.

The same subject has been included as an optional subject in the school with a majority of Tilung-speaking students in order to preserve and promote the endangered Tilung language. So far, the curriculum has been prepared up to class 3.

Article 31 (5) of Nepal’s 2072 BS Constitution guarantees the right of members of each community to receive education in their mother tongue.
