KATHMANDU: Nine people had lost their lives to a bus accident that occurred at Lubhughat of Sunapati Rural Municipality in Ramechhap today.

Though the cause of the accident is yet to be established, police preliminary investigations suggest a brake failure as the reason for it. Nepal’s geographical situation, poor roadways, lack of regular vehicle checks and subsequent sudden technical fault in the vehicle and drivers’ negligence are often blamed for rising cases of road accidents.

Regular vehicle checks can prevent accidents and save lives, but this culture is yet to be part of our daily routine. According to Sunapati Rural Municipality chair Thulokanchha Tamang, general maintenance was carried out the bus on Sunday too, citing the brake failure issue.

The bus (Ba 3 Kha 8396) had left Hiledevi, the center of Sunadevi Rural Municipality, for Kathmandu at around 7:00 am today and it met with an accident on the border of Sunapati-5 and the Khandadevi Rural Municipality-1. Administratively, the site is the part of Sunapati, according to Khandadevi Rural Municipality chair Gyan Kumar Shrestha.

It is said the bus travelled through around 10 kilometers of graveled road before falling 30-35 meters off the road. According to eyewitnesses, they could see the vehicle jiggling as it was coming closer to their sight and eventually falling down the road and hitting the ground after failing to tackle a wide turning point at the site.

The accident site lies around 63 kilometers away from Manthali, the district headquarters of Ramechhap. The vehicle had to complete just some hundred meters to meet the Mid-Hill Highway and in a distance of some kilometers, it would meet the BP Highway if it could avoid the accident.

The accident reportedly took place at 10:30 am. Three persons with serious injuries were airlifted to Kathmandu while the remaining were transported to the Dhulikhel Hospital in Kavrepalanchwok for treatment, according to Ramechhap’s chief district officer Deepak Kumar Pahari.
