KATHMANDU: A disaster official said the death toll from an earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan early Wednesday had risen to 920, with 610 people injured, and that the number of casualties could rise further.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake struck overnight, flattening homes as many people slept, with its epicenter in the mountainous area near the country’s border with Pakistan — about 27 miles from the city of Khost — with a magnitude of 5.9.
