7 arrested for smuggling gold from Dubai, including Chinese and Indian

KATHMANDU: Seven people, including Indian and Chinese nationals, have been arrested on suspicion of gold smuggling.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Basanta Kunwar, they were arrested on Saturday afternoon on the basis of information that some people were smuggling gold by evading customs on a Nepal Airlines flight from Dubai to Kathmandu.

According to Superintendent of Police Krishna Prasad Koirala, the two were initially monitored by a special investigation team deployed by the police based on the information.

During the investigation, police kept a close eye on Suresh Bahadur Shahi, 42, of Gulmi and currently residing at Sainamaina-1 in Rupandehi, and Sandeep Chand Thakuri, 29, of Kapilvastu, outside the arrival gate of Tribhuvan International Airport.

Among them, 572,160 grams of gold was found with Sandeep Chand Thakuri and 396.89 grams with Suresh Bahadur Shahi.

They applied the gold paste to various parts of the outfit, such as shirts, pants, and underwear. The police extracted the amount of gold by melting it from the cloth.

According to Koirala, five other people were arrested after police apprehended them.

Among the arrested are  Nirmala Ghalan, of Bara Jitpur, Simara-16, and currently living in Bouddha, Kathmandu, Varun Bhakta Mathema, 41, of Dhanusha Bateshwar-4, and currently living in Buddhanilkantha, and Lopsang Galsen, 27, of China Tibet, Chengdu, and currently living in Bouddha.

Likewise, Yuvaraj Bhushal, 42, of Nawalparasi West Sunwal-10 and currently residing in Macchapokharai, and Aman Rajput, 51, of Krishna Nagar, India and currently residing in Bagdol, Lalitpur.
