KATHMANDU: People’s representatives of Sisdole in Nuwakot have urged the newly elected leadership of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) to relieve them of the garbage smell.

The site has been used as a dumping site for solid waste collected from 18 local levels in the Kathmandu Valley for years.

During a meeting with Kathmandu Metropolitan mayor Balendra Shah and deputy-mayor Sunita Dangol today, the local representatives said the Sisdol folks were also humans and needed human treatment.

Citing that denial to take notice of the voices of locals would further fuel the problem, Kakani Rural Municipality-3 chair Ghananath Bajgain urged the KMC leadership to take their issues seriously and address them on time.

The locals accused the State of never seeking a sustainable way for waste management.

In response, the mayor said that the team had met with the Minister for Urban Development on Tuesday regarding the issues of Sisdol folks and assured of a long-term solution of the problem in cooperation of the Ministry and the metropolitian

He presented the idea of using chemicals to treat odours from garbage collection at Sisdol as the immediate action and said no force would be exercised for the management of waste from the Valley in Sisdol. “It will be carried out in cooperation with the Sisdol folks.”

It may be noted the waste collection in the Kathmandu Valley has remained suspended for a week due to the obstructions from the Sisdol folks.
