KATHMANDU: The Weaver Bird (Toop Chara), also known as the bird engineer, belongs to the sparrow family. Dhading Tirutolayu, the Weaver Bird, is also known as ‘Sujero’ or ‘Bakecho.’

In the Eastern Terai, it is also known as ‘Chonchi.’ Weaver Birds prefer to live in groups and frequently construct their nests in tall trees or bamboos.

The main food of the herbivorous Weaver Bird is paddy and small nuts. Weaver birds do not eat grasshoppers and prefer to live near crops and ponds.

Males of these birds are yellow and smooth around the head and neck, whereas females are plain and fuzzy.

The main job of a male Weaver Bird is to build a nest. The female bird, who watches until the male builds a nest, may not like the nest.

They build nests as good as they can in order to attract a female. During the breeding season, male Weaver Birds work hard to build nests in order to attract a female.

The female chooses her favourite nest and lays eggs in the nest. If the female does not like the nest, the male builds a new one and tries again to attract the female bird.
