KATHMANDU: It has been 21 years since the Narayanhiti Durbar massacre, which resulted in the assassination of the dynasty of King Birendra Shah then-King Birendra.
The then-King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and his family, including Queen Aishwarya, Prince Dipendra and Nirajan, and Princess Shruti Shah, were assassinated inside the Narayanhiti Durbar on the evening of Jestha 19, 2058 (June 1, 2001). The massacre also claimed the lives of Prince Dhirendra, Princess Jayanti, Princess Shanti, Princess Sharada, Kumar Khadga, and other members of the royal family.
The assassination was described as a “grand design” by then-Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. However, no one has yet sent in the perfect solution, which is not surprising.
After the murder, a high-level investigation committee formed under the coordination of the then Chief Justice had released a report blaming Yuvaraj Dipendra for the incident. The report was made public by the then Speaker Taranath Ranabhat.
The monarchy in Nepal did not last long after the annihilation of the Birendra dynasty, who created the image of a liberal king.
Following the death of King Birendra, his brother Gyanendra Shah ascended to the throne. He is the last king in Nepal’s history.
On Jestha 15, 2065 (28 May 2008), seven years after the massacre, the monarchy was declared to be over.
