KATHMANDU: MAY. 30 – Balendra (Balen) Sah, the newly elected Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has taken the oath of office.

After taking the oath from the Chief Electoral Officer, Mayor Shah read out the details of the oath in Nepali.

Chief Election Officer Raju Kumar Khatiwada administered the oath of office to Chief Electoral Officer Balendra Shah today at the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in the City Hall.

Similarly, Chief Shah administered the oath of office to Sunita Dangol, the Deputy Mayor, as well as all 32 ward chairpersons and members. Dangol, the Deputy Mayor, took the oath in Nepali.

Mayor Shah and Deputy Mayor Dangol are scheduled to take office today. Independent candidate Shah was elected as the mayor and Sunita Dangol of the CPN (UML) was elected as the deputy mayor. The counting of votes of the Kathmandu Metropolitian had started on the morning of Baisakh 31 (May 14).

Only last Friday were the final results of the metropolitan election made public. There were no Dalit women candidates in Wards 24 and 25. There were 56 candidates from various parties and independents, with 35 running for the position of deputy chief. Nepali Congress won 19 of the 32 wards, while UML won 12 of them. In one ward, the CPN (Unified Socialist Party) has won.

In Kathmandu Metropolitian, there were three lakh 242 voters and approximately one lakh 90 thousand 962 votes were cast. The Election Office reports that 7,682 votes were dismissed.
