KATHMANDU: MAY. 20 – The five-year term of the new local level people’s representative is starting. The term of the people’s representative elected in 2074 BS expired on Thursday at midnight.

The Election Commission has stated that the term of 753 municipalities began on Friday, despite the fact that the final election results are still pending.

The results of 627 municipalities in the local level election were made public until 7 a.m. The final results of 627 places, including sub-metropolitans, municipalities, and rural municipalities, from the 753 local level polls held on May 13 have been released.

Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist Center, CPN-Unified Socialist, JSP, Democratic Socialist Party, RPP and some independents have won the post from the municipality so far.

According to the most recent figures, the Congress won 277 seats, the UML 173, the UCPN (Maoist) 111, the CPN-Unified Socialist Party 14 seats, the JSP 18 seats, LOSAPA 7, RPP 4 and 23 municipality mayors won the post of independent candidates.

Congress is leading in 46 seats while UML is leading in 25 seats. Similarly, the Maoist Center has secured 10 seats, the CPN-U has secured 5 seats, the JSP has secured 17 seats and the Democratic Socialist Party has secured 5 seats. Others are ahead in 11 places.

According to Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya, the election was held on May 13 because the deadline for retaining the post of local level people’s representative was on May 19.

The commission has also directed that the counting of votes in the municipality where the election has been held after May 13 be completed within four days.

Among the elected people’s representatives, the rural municipality chairperson and the mayor have to take an oath of office and secrecy from the district judge within seven days of being elected.

There is a legal requirement that the chairperson or mayor, vice-chairperson of the rural municipality, deputy mayor of the municipality, ward chairperson, members of the village and municipal council take an oath within seven days of taking an oath.

The commission has issued a circular to the Chief Election Officer’s office, requesting that they take an oath of office and secrecy as required by law.
