KATHMANDU: MAY. 16 – CPN (Maoist Centre)’s Bijay Prakash Banem has been elected to the post of chairperson of Mauwakhola Rural Municipality in the Taplejung district.

Banem secured 2,609 votes and defeated his closest competitor CPN (UML)’s Rajan Kumar Thaklung who garnered 2,052 votes. It may be noted that Muawakhola Rural Municipality is the hometown to the secretary of CPN (UML) and former minister Yogesh Bhattarai as well as the hometown of UML’s late leader Madan Bhandari.

Similarly, the vote count that concluded today unveiled that Nepali Congress’s Kamal Kumari Banem has been elected vice-chairperson of the same rural municipality securing 2,510 votes.

UML’s candidates had been emerging victorious in Mauwakhola Rural Municipality since 2048 BS. In the previous local level election, UML had enjoyed a sweeping victory as its candidates had won in all wards and all categories except for in the Dalit women category.
