KATHMANDU: MAY. 16 – Buddha Jayanti, which is observed every year on the day of Baisakh Shukla Purnima, is observed today with a variety of programs held across the country.
As the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha, Asia’s star, occurred on the day of Baisakh Shukla Purnima, Buddhists regard this as an important day and call it Trisanyoga Day.
Siddhartha Gautama, born in Lumbini, Nepal, in 563 BC, about 600 years ago, left the palace in search of knowledge at the age of 29, the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Mayadevi. After six years of penance, he attained enlightenment in 528 BC in Bodh Gaya, India, at the age of 35. After this he is said to have gained world fame as a Buddha.
This year, on the 2,562nd Buddha Jayanti, processions and peace processions with Buddha statues will be held at Lumbini in Rupandehi, Namobuddha in Kavrepalanchok, Boudha in Kathmandu, Swayambhu, Charumati Vihar in Chabahil, Boudha Bihar, Gumba, Stupa and Chaitya.
