KATHMANDU: MAY. 16 – Jayaram Mahat, an independent candidate, was elected in Ward 4 of Kathmandu’s Gokarneshwor Municipality. With 1027 votes, Mahat defeated the main political party’s candidate for ward chairmanship.

Along with Mahat’s victory, the UML’s success in winning panels in three wards has come to an end. Among the other members of the ward, Congress has won two open seats, including two Dalit women, and UML has won one woman seat.

This time, the independent candidate won in a constituency where the UML has won local elections since 2049 BS. Mahat, who was elected as a ward member on behalf of the Nepali Congress in the previous election, announced his candidacy this time because the party did not provide him with a ticket.

He was the State Secretary of Nepali Congress Kathmandu Constituency No. 3. (B). He was backed by the CPN-Unified Socialist Party and the CPN-Maoist Center, who formed an alliance in the ward.

His nearest rival, UML’s Shree Kumar Shrestha, got 929 votes. Shrestha is also the outgoing ward chairperson for UML in the 2074 BS local elections. Similarly, Gyan Kumar Shrestha, a Congress candidate, got 794 votes.

Until the results of the four wards are finalized, the CPN (UML) leads the municipality by a narrow margin in votes for mayor and deputy mayor.
