KATHMANDU: MAY. 11 – Leonid Kravchuk, Ukraine’s first independent president, died on Tuesday at the age of 88, according to Ukraine’s Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak.

“Leonid Makarovych (Kravchuk) was a wise patriot of Ukraine, a truly historic figure in our independence,” Yermak wrote on Telegram.

Kravchuk was Ukraine’s president from December 1991 to July 1994. He later served in the Ukrainian parliament as the leader of the parliamentary group Social Democratic Party of Ukraine.

Kravchuk also served as the honorary president of the Ukraine-China Friendship Society.
