KATHMANDU: MAY. 6 – The Election Commission has requested that international border crossings be closed two days before the local elections. The commission’s letter requested that all movement through border checkpoints be halted beginning at midnight on Tuesday, May 10 and continuing until the voting is completed.
According to the commission’s spokesperson, Shaligram Sharma Poudel, the decision to conduct election-related administrative work in a more clean, free, fair, safe, and fearless environment was made at a meeting of commission officials on Thursday. If the government acts in accordance with the commission’s recommendation, the Nepal-India and Nepal-China borders will be closed for three days.
Following the Commission’s decision, a letter was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, according to the Commission. Similarly, the commission has requested that all internal means of transportation in the country be closed on May 13, the day of voting. The silence period of the local elections will start from May 10.
