Congress, UML & Biplav alliance against Maoists in Thawang
Thawang Municipality was won by the CPN-Maoist Center in the 2074 BS local elections.
KATHMANDU: MAY. 2 – In many municipalities, the ruling Nepali Congress and the Maoist Center have formed alliances against the CPN-UML. In Rolpa’s Thawang, however, there seems to be the opposite. Not only the Congress and UML but also the Communist Party of Nepal ‘Biplav’ has formed an alliance against the Maoist center.
Five candidates, including Congress, UML, and Biplav-led independents, withdrew their candidacies, giving rise to the formation of the alliance. “We have decided to withdraw the presidential nomination by supporting an independent candidate in Thawang,” Congress treasurer Bam Bahadur Roka stated.
Ramesh Roka gave his candidature from Congress in Thawang. Nakash Gharti, who was nominated by CPN-UML, has also withdrawn his nomination.
The CPN (Maoist) had tried to move Amit Gharti forward. Only Amit Gharti, Ajay Gharti, Darjit Roka Magar and Mahesh Budha Magar were nominated from the CPN (Maoist). In the end, all three parties agreed on Darjeet’s name.
“We support Darjit, everyone has agreed on his name,” said Santosh Budha, a member of the CPN (Maoist) central secretariat. Thawang Municipality was won by the CPN-Maoist Center in the 2074 BS local elections.
This time, the Congress, the UML, and the CPN (Maoist) are united in their opposition to the Maoist center. In Rolpa, 114 candidates withdrew their candidacies at ten different local levels.
