KATHMANDU: APRIL. 25 – Today marks the seventh anniversary of the Gorkha earthquake, which is being commemorated with a variety of events.

On Baisakh 12, 2072 BS, at 11:56 p.m., a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Barpak in Gorkha district. Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Nuwakot, Dhading, Rasuwa, Gorkha, Makwanpur, Sindhuli, and Okhaldhunga districts were all affected.

The government declared the 14 most-affected districts to be the most-affected districts. At least 9,000 people were killed in the earthquake.

More than 800,000 private homes were damaged in 14 of the worst-affected districts and 18 of the least-affected districts. Around 1,500 cultural sites were damaged as a result of the earthquake.

The quake affected schools, health facilities, security agencies’ buildings, roads and drinking water projects in the worst-affected and affected districts. The National Reconstruction Authority was established in Poush, 2072 BS to rebuild the structures damaged by the earthquake seven years ago.

Since 2056 BS, the government has been commemorating Earthquake Safety Day in remembrance of the earthquake on Magh 2, 1990 BS.

The government’s aim to keep people safe from earthquakes by increasing awareness throughout the day. Nepal is an area of ​​seismic risk. Various public awareness programs are being organized on this occasion, according to reports.
