Alliance finalized division of metropolitan & sub-metropolitan

KATHMANDU: APRIL. 20 – For the local elections, the ruling coalition has agreed on the distribution of the mayor and deputy mayor of the metropolitan and sub-metropolitan areas.

The coalition parties reached an agreement on Wednesday at the PM’s residence in Baluwatar on the distribution of mayors and deputy mayors for six metropolitan and 11 sub-metropolitan areas.

According to the agreement, Congress will take the post of mayor of Biratnagar, Kathmandu and Lalitpur while Birgunj, Bharatpur and Pokhara will take the post of Deputy Mayor.

Similarly, the Congress has got mayors of Dharan, Itahari, Kalaiya, Butwal, Tulsipur, Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi, while Jitpur has got deputy chiefs of Simara, Ghorahi and Hetauda Sub-Metropolitian.

The UCPN-M will get the leadership of Jitpur Simara and Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitian including Bharatpur Metropolitian, while Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitian, Dharan and Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitian will have deputy chiefs.

Similarly, the CPN-Unified Socialist Party has got the leadership of Pokhara Metropolitan City and Hetauda Sub-Metropolitian while Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Itahari, Butwal and Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitian areas have been agreed to have deputy chiefs, said government spokesperson and Congress leader Gyanendra Bahadur Karki.

Similarly, the JSP has been given the leadership of Birgunj Metropolitan City and Janakpur Sub-Metropolitan, as well as the Deputy Chiefs of Biratnagar, Kalaiya, and Nepalgunj, according to Karki.

He stated that a meeting of the relevant committees would be held based on the alliance’s criteria and consensus to immediately distribute seats and select candidates.

Similarly, Karki stated that if no consensus is reached, an agreement has been reached within the alliance for friendly competition.

The MoU has been signed by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, UCPN (M) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, CPN-U Chairperson Madhav Nepal, JSP Chairperson Upendra Yadav and Janamorcha Vice-Chairperson Durga Poudel.
