BIRATNAGAR: APRIL. 15 – Rare and complex tumor has been removed by operating on a patient at Nobel Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar. Malati Rai, 34, of Arjundhara Municipality-11, Jhapa has been successfully removed which was growing from the back of her neck to the chest ‘brachial plexus tumor’.

The tumor was successfully removed by a team of doctors led by Dr Rishikesh Thakur, a senior surgeon for Nobel’s head and neck cancer. Dr. Ranjiv Jha of the Department of Orthopedics, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Thakur of the Department of Otolaryngology, and Dr. Lokesh Yadav, a chest surgeon, were also present during the operation. Dr. Thakur claims that this is the first time in Nepal that such a complex and rare tumor has been successfully removed.

‘An estimated one in a million people has such a tumor, which is extremely rare. ‘There has never been a successful removal of such a complex and rare tumor in Nepal,’ says Dr Thakur. ‘This is the first time in Nepal that we have removed such a complex tumor.’

A 17 cm long tumor was successfully removed by cutting from the upper part of the neck to the ribs. According to the doctors, there was a high risk of nerve damage when the tumor was removed because it grew along veins that spread to the throat and hands. As a result, there was a risk of not moving the hand. Malati’s hand, on the other hand, is now normal after the tumor was successfully removed.

A lump of flesh had formed on the back of her neck about a year ago. The lump, which is very tight when touched, grows and spreads to the chest. Malati experienced difficulty raising her hands as the tumor grew, as well as stinging and tingling. Malati’s husband, Raj Kumar, stated that she was brought to Nobel and operated on after refusing to have the operation performed at other hospitals in the East. After the successful operation, the patient and her family were happy.
