KATHMANDU: APRIL. 14 – The 2621st birth anniversary of Mahavira Jain, who lived a celibate life and dedicated his day to spreading the message of truth, nonviolence, non-stealing, and non-acquisition, was celebrated today with a variety of events.

Mahavira was born in 599 BC in Kundalgram, India, to a royal Jain family (mother Trishala and father Siddhartha) on the 13th day of the bright moon of the month of Chait in the lunar calendar.

According to Jain literature, he decided to leave his life as a member of the royal family in search of spiritual awakening and peace.

The Mahavira spent around 12 years for meditation and austereness before going among the human community to make them aware of Jain philosophy.

His messages for the people are to practice nonviolence, to be truthful, and to not accumulate more property than is necessary. He is also better known for his book ” Uttar Adhyaya Sutra Kirti’ which is available in the Nepali translated version as well. It is translated by Dr Manibhadra Muniji.

The Nepal Jain Council organized programs to commemorate Mahavira Jain’s 2621st birthday today.
