Dr Deuba urges EC to manage electoral quotas for women based on proportional inclusion
KATHMANDU: APRIL. 13 – Arzu Rana Deuba, the leader of the Nepali Congress, has objected to the Election Commission’s recent decision. Arzu, who is also the wife of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, has objected to the Election Commission’s requirement that political parties require women to run for only one position.
According to Article 17 (4) of the Local Level Election Act 2073, when political parties field candidates for the posts of Chief and Deputy Chief of the local level, women candidates must be fielded in 50% of the seats.
Deuba said, “I would like to inform the Election Commission that the Election Commission does not have the right to trample on Article 38 (4) of the Constitution of Nepal and I request the Chief Election Commissioner and other members of the Election Commission to correct this decision respecting the Constitution of Nepal.”
