WASHINGTON: APRIL. 8 – The UN Human Rights Council has suspended Russia. Russia has been suspended from the United Nations General Assembly due to “overwhelming” opposition.

Russia has been sanctioned for allegedly violating human rights when it invaded Ukraine.

In a vote in the General Assembly, 93 people voted in favor of suspending Russia, while 24 voted against it.

Similarly, 58 countries did not participate in the voting. Russia’s suspension from the Human Rights Council has been welcomed by US President Joe Biden. He emphasized the importance of isolating Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I am very pleased that the United Nations Human Rights Council has not allowed Russia to remain, and thank those who voted against Russia at the UN General Assembly,” Biden said in a statement.

He also said that the removal of Russia from the Council was a significant event in its history.
