Today marks the 12th Memorial Day of Girija Prasad Koirala
KATHMANDU: MARCH. 21 – Today marks the 12th Memorial Day of Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.
During the Rana rule, Koirala became involved in politics by leading the workers’ movement at Biratnagar Jute Mill. He became Prime Minister five times. Koirala, who was elected President of the Nepali Congress in 2053 BS, served three terms as President of the Nepali Congress.
Koirala had led the way in restoring the parliament through the people’s movement of 2062/63, ending the Maoist armed war through the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and ensuring a federal democratic republic through the election of the Constituent Assembly.
Koirala had also played the role of interim head of state after the announcement of the House of Representatives on Jestha 4, 2063 BS (May 18, 2006).
Koirala is considered to be the facilitator of the peace process and constitution-drafting process. Under his leadership, the Shah dynasty, which had a history of 240 years from Nepal, came to an end on Jestha 15 2065 BS (28 May 2008) and Nepal was established as a federal democratic republic. Koirala passed away on Chaitra 7 2066 BS (20 March 2010).
Remembering Koirala’s contribution to the establishment of peace in Nepal, the Nepali Congress, its brothers and well-wishers are celebrating the 12th Memorial Day of Koirala today with various programs.
