Roman Abramovich blocked from selling Chelsea for destabilising Ukraine

KATHMANDU: MARCH. 10 – The British government has decided to freeze Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s assets following reports of a sale to English football club Chelsea. Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who owns Chelsea, will be unable to sell the club as a result of this decision.
The 55-year-old, who purchased the west London club back in June 2003, announced last week that he was putting the club up for sale following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a fortnight ago, with the net proceeds from the sale to be donated to “all victims of the war in Ukraine.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that “There can be no safe havens for those who have supported Putin’s vicious assault on Ukraine.

“Today’s sanctions are the latest step in the UK’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people. We will be ruthless in pursuing those who enable the killing of civilians, destruction of hospitals and illegal occupation of sovereign allies.”
Chelsea’s future is uncertain after the British government barred Abramovich from entering the country following the announcement of his ownership of the club. The British government has frozen Abramovich’s assets due to his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia’s military action against Ukraine has prompted sports organizations all over the world to ban Russia from all forms of international competition.
“Abramovich is in close contact with the person who ordered the military action against Ukraine, and his union is receiving assistance from Putin and Russia,” according to the statement.
Following the British government’s decision, there is growing interest in what he will do next.
