One million refugees left Ukraine since Russia’s invasion: UNHCR
GENEVA: MARCH. 3 – According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), as many as one million refugees have fled Ukraine in the seven days since Russia launched its military operation there.
UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi stated on his Twitter account, “We have seen a million refugees flee from Ukraine to neighboring countries in just seven days.
For many millions more inside Ukraine, it is time for the guns to be silenced so that life-saving humanitarian aid can be delivered.”
Notably, it has been eight days since Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized military operations in Ukraine’s Donbas region, following his recognition of the independence of Ukraine’s breakaway regions, Donetsk and Luhansk.
Meanwhile, at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, 141 countries condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while five countries supported Russia and 35 countries abstained from voting.
