Parliament building security tightened
KATHMANDU: FEB. 24 – Since the MCC was tabled in parliament, security at the parliament building has been beefed up in response to growing protests. Security has been increased during today’s House of Representatives meeting, with protests possible in the Parliament building area.
Barbed wire has been placed on the parliament building’s outer wall by police. According to reports, the wall was cordoned off to prevent a clash between protesters and police. There was a clash between protesters and police officers in the field of the MCC proposal were frequent between the new Baneshwor and the surrounding area.
Protests had been taking place in various parts of the Kathmandu Valley, including New Baneshwor, for about a week before the MCC proposal was tabled. The ruling CPN-Maoist Center, the CPN-Unified Socialist Party, Janamorcha, and other fraternal organizations have begun agitation. They have announced that the agitation will be stepped up starting today.
Bishnu Kumar KC, the Central Spokesperson of Nepal Police, stated that security has been tightened in anticipation of possible protests. “So far, the situation is peaceful,” he told the Associated Press, “but we are on high alert for potential security threats.”
A large number of security personnel have been deployed especially in New Baneshwor, Babar Mahal and Maitighar areas.
