Ruling party lacks a two-thirds majority to pass resolution
KATHMANDU: FEB. 13 – Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JB Rana was automatically suspended as soon as the impeachment was registered in Parliament. Although a two-thirds majority is required for the impeachment to be passed, the Chief Justice is required to resign as soon as the impeachment is registered.
Not enough two-thirds
Even if the impeachment is registered, a two-thirds majority with the ruling party is required to pass it. For two-thirds, the House of Representatives requires the support of more than 180 MPs.
However, the five ruling parties do not have a two-thirds majority. This requires the support of the UML. The resolution, however, has not been signed by MPs from the ruling JSP and Rastriya Janamorcha. At present, two of the Nepali Congress’s 61 members have been suspended, leaving 59 MPs, 48 from the UCPN (Maoist) and 23 from the CPN-S.
Similarly, the JSP has 21 MPs and Janamorcha has one. In addition to the JSP and Janamorcha, the ruling party has 130 MPs. There are only 152 members when JSP and Janamorcha are included.
