Local level elections: 18 million voters
KATHMANDU: FEB. 8 – With the decision of the government to hold local level elections on May 13, the country has now entered the election campaign. The announcement made by the cabinet meeting on Monday has not only removed the doubts about the by-elections but also ensured that next year will be an ‘election year’.
As per the statutory provisions, the parties which were compelled to hold their general conventions in Mangsir and Poush will now intensify their programs targeting the election. Along with announcing the date of local elections, the Election Commission has also postponed the voter list compilation.
The commission said that so far more than 18 million people across the country have been included in the voter list. According to the Election Commission, this is a preliminary figure. The commission has directed the offices across the country to send adequate details of the voter list to the commission’s office.
As the time for local elections approached, the commission had recently intensified the voter list compilation work. Commission spokesperson Shalikram Sharma Poudel informed that about 1.5 million voters have been added recently. Only those whose names have been collected in the voter list will be allowed to vote.
