KATHMANDU: FEB. 6 – Shree Panchami, which is celebrated every year on the day of Magh Shukla Panchami, is being celebrated all over the country today by worshipping Goddess Saraswati. It is believed that worshipping Saraswati on the day of Vasant Panchami will increase one’s knowledge and wisdom.

Every year on the fifth day of the bright half of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Magh, which usually falls in late January or February, Vasant Panchami is observed. Because spring is considered as the “King of All Seasons,” the festival starts forty days before the date.

Students are worshipping Saraswati at home as the school is closed this year due to COVID-19. Devotees flock to Neel Saraswati in Lazimpat, Saraswati Temple in Swayambhu, Saraswati Kund in Lele in Lalitpur and Saraswati temples across the country. This year, worship is being performed following the health standards.

It is customary for parents to teach their children who have not yet been sent to school to write their first words with their fingers. There is a religious notion that if knowledge is imparted to Shree Panchami, it will be beneficial.

Being the goddess of knowledge and creation, especially writers, artists, journalists, teachers and students worship their objects of art, such as pens, copies, kuchi and musical instruments, as Saraswati, while Tantrikss worship Taradevi for Tantra Siddhi.

This day is also known as ‘Vasant Panchami,’ since it is believed that as the sun moves north, the day will become longer and the spring season will begin.
