Preparing to propose another date for local level elections

KATHMANDU: FEB. 1 – The Election Commission is preparing to propose another date for local elections. The commission is preparing to propose another date after the ruling coalition agreed to hold local elections within the month of May 2022.
Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya informed that the commission was holding internal discussions and preparations for the date of local elections. The commission had earlier proposed to the government to hold local level elections in one phase on April 27, 2022, or in two phases on April 27 and May 5.
In the commission’s proposal, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had said that the date of local elections would be announced after consultation between the ruling parties.
Asked if the commission is going to propose another date for the local body elections, Chief Election Commissioner Thapaliya said, “The commission is preparing. It will be clearer after discussions with the prime minister.”
