Iran qualifies for World Cup

KATHMANDU: JAN. 28 – Iran has become the first team from Asia to be selected in the Qatar World Cup. Although Qatar will be able to play the World Cup directly as the host, Iran has decided to play the World Cup by passing the selection stage.

In last night’s match, Iran defeated Iraq 1-0 and qualified for the World Cup for the sixth time. Mehdi Taremi of Iran scored the goal. South Korea’s chances are high when Iran is selected in Group A. South Korea has 17 points from 7 games. Winning a point game will ensure their World Cup journey.

With three games to go, Saudi Arabia tops Group B with 19 points, followed by Japan and Australia with 15 and 14 points respectively.
