It is unconstitutional to hold state and federal elections on local basis: General Secretary Thapa
KATHMANDU: JAN. 20 – According to Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa, the postponement of local elections has made it unconstitutional to hold state and federal elections. He made the remarks as the ruling coalition was discussing whether or not to hold federal and state assembly elections.
The General Secretary believes that the local level should not be left vacant while the election is being decided. “The constitution we have drafted does not envisage the vacancy of people’s representatives at the local level,” Thapa said. Congress is clear that every decision of this government, which is made up of struggles against unconstitutional measures, must be in line with the constitution. ‘
UCPN (M) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ proposed at a meeting of the ruling coalition’s Coordinating Committee that federal and state assembly elections be held in Baisakh-Jestha (April-May), followed by local elections. The CPN-U and the Rastriya Janamorcha both agreed to the proposal.
