Date of local elections should be announced within first week of Jan
KATHMANDU: JAN. 14 – According to the Election Commission, the date of local elections shall be declared within the first week of Magh (Jan/Feb). On Friday (today), the commission conducted an all-party meeting and informed the parties that local elections will be held during the first week of Magh.
According to the Election Commission’s spokesperson, Shaligram Sharma, Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya briefed the leaders of the major parties on preparations and future policies and stated that the election will be held in the first week of Magh. Similarly, Thapaliya said that according to the election law, the commission needs 120 days to prepare and the election should be declared within the first week of Magh.
According to Sharma, the new people’s representative’s term will begin on May 20, and the commission’s term will begin on the first day of the election. The commission concluded that holding local elections in Baisakh (April/May) would not be a problem under the current constitution and act.
