RIO DE JANEIRO: JAN. 9 – At least six people died, 32 people were injured and about 20 are missing after several giant rocks collapsed from a geological canyon and fell onto four boats on Furnas Lake in Brazil’s southeast Minas Gerais state, rescue teams said Saturday.
Large rocks fell from the canyon that surrounds Furnas Lake, in Capitolio City, some 300 kilometers from Belo Horizonte, the state capital of Minas Gerais, on Saturday afternoon for unclear causes.
At the moment, four boats on sightseeing tours were struck by the rocks.
Heavy rains were recorded in the area on Saturday morning, prompting some geologists to believe that the rocks may have fallen due to a waterspout in the canyon.
