KATHMANDU: JAN. 4 – The Election Commission has completed all preparations for the registration of nomination papers for the 19 vacant seats in the National Assembly. The nomination of candidates for the forthcoming election will be filed on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to Komal Dhamala, the Commission’s Assistant Spokesperson.

The election will feature twelve political parties. On January 9, the commission will present the candidate with an election symbol. The terms of eight CPN (UML) members, four CPN (Unified Socialist) members, four CPN (Maoist Center) members, and three Nepali Congress members end on March 4.

There is a provision that the election should be held 35 days before the expiration of the term of the member. Nine political parties will participate in the election in all the states and three parties will participate in the special states only.

According to the commission, Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Rastriya Janamorcha, Nepal Loktantrik Party, People’s Socialist Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Nepal Pariwar Dal will participate in all the states. Democratic Socialist Party State 2 and Far Western State, Nepal Workers Peasants Party Bagmati and Samajbadi Prajatantrik Janata Party will participate only in State 2.

For the election, an election official has already been chosen, and polling stations and voting booths have been identified. The election had a total of 2,025 voters, including members of the state assembly and the chief and deputy chief of the municipality. Members of the state legislature will cast 48 votes in the election, while the chief and deputy chief of the municipality will cast 18 votes.

There will be 1,493 local-level voters and 532 state assembly voters in the election. Candidates from seven women, three Dalits, two persons with disabilities or minorities and seven other groups will be elected from the election.

A constitutional provision requires that one-third of the 59-member National Assembly, representing the intelligentsia, complete their term every two years. Although a member of the National Assembly’s tenure of office was six years, for the first time, the term was set by a round of voting. As soon as the election symbol is issued, the commission intends to implement the election code of conduct to everyone.
