Nepal Army reaches out to Gurja avalanche survivors
MYAGDI: DEC. 31 – The Nepal Army returned after rescuing survivors of an avalanche at Gurja in the district’s Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-1. Following the avalanche, an Army team from Kathmandu flew to the incident site with relief supplies and a rescue team.
One local, Ram Bahadur Chhantyal, 50, has gone missing in the incident, while three others have been stranded: Jagdevi Chhantyal, Buddhi Chhantyal, and Lal Bahadur Chhantyal. According to the police, they were all living in a hut distant from the settlement when the disaster occurred.
Ward chair Jhhak Chhantyal said that a team of four people carried by the army’s chopper has been formed for a rescue effort.
The disaster also caused property losses and disrupted the road, electricity and mobile towers. The incident site is remote.
It takes a one-day walk from neighboring Lulang to reach the village. So in view of difficulties in rescue efforts, the Nepal Army team was called for help, said the Rural Municipality Vice-Chair Resham Chhantyal.
