Birendra Chowk now has a statue of former King Birendra after 16 years
SURKHET: DEC. 29 – A statue of former King Birendra Shah has been placed at Birendra Chowk in Birendranagar, the capital of Karnali. The statue was placed by an independent group of people from Surkhet on Wednesday.
Yogi Bal Bhadra, Goraksha Pithadhis, who led the work of placing the statue, said that a half-height statue of the former King Birendra was placed on Dec. 29 (Wednesday) on the occasion of his 76th birth anniversary.
Birendranagar is named in honour of the late King Birendra, who planned and established it as the first planned town in Nepal. Remembering the development of Birendranagar, the statue of Birendra was placed for the first time in 2044 BS and during the Jana Andolan (Nepalese revolution) of 2062 BS statue of Birendra was removed.
The statue could not be erected due to a long-running dispute. “Our nation is dearer to our king than our souls,” were the slogans chanted by the youths who led the procession.
