Deuba reelected NC President
KATHMANDU: DEC. 15 – Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has been re-elected for the post of president. He has been elected for a second term after defeating the presidential candidate Dr. Shekhar Koirala in the second phase of the election under the 14th General Convention.
Deuba received 2,724 votes in Tuesday’s second phase election. His rival Koirala received 1817 votes. 33 votes were invalidated. Out of the total 4743 delegates of the Congress General Convention, 4564 had cast their votes in the second round of voting for the election of the President on Tuesday.
The election was held on Tuesday after none of the five presidential candidates got more than 50 percent votes in the first phase of the election held under the 14th General Convention in Kathmandu. The election was contested between Deuba and Shekhar Koirala. After winning the second phase, Deuba will lead the party for four years as the re-elected president.
In Monday’s election, Deuba, Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Bimalendra Nidhi and Kalyan Gurung competed for the presidency. After Deuba and Koirala didn’t get more votes, the two contested in the second phase.
Deuba, who had earlier lost the post twice, had reached the leadership level of the party from the 13th general convention. In that process, he defeated the leader Ram Chandra Poudel in the second phase of elections and was elected president for the first time.
