KATHMANDU: DEC. 10 – President Bidya Devi Bhandari has given a message of best wishes on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day today.

She stressed the need for deep internalization of the universal concept of human rights, the foundational structure of the democratic system, and its effective implementation.

The provisions of fundamental rights in the constitution have made human rights broader in Nepal, the President mentioned, adding that it is the State’s obligation to adhere to protecting, promoting and fulfilling human rights, as Nepal has been party to various international conventions on human rights.

She also reminded that there is a constitutional body, the National Human Rights Commission, to monitor whether the human rights provisions are implemented by the State.

International Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10 in commemoration of the issuance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948. The Day is being marked by organizing various programs in Nepal too.

President Bhandari further stated that only the State and its agencies are not enough for the promotion and protection of human rights. So, all sides and sectors should be responsible for it.

She sought the role of all sectors to build a just and equitable society with the guarantee of socio-cultural and economic rights.

In the message of best wishes, she further urged all sectors to end all sorts of discrimination and inequalities from society by bolstering activism in all three layers of government.
