YouTuber cannot be considered a journalist: Chairperson Basnet

DHANGADHI: DEC. 8 – Chairperson of the Press Council Nepal Bal Krishna Basnet has said that a person working in a YouTube channel cannot be considered a journalist even if it is registered with the Information Department. Speaking at a public hearing on the Code of Conduct for Journalists and Media held in Dhangadhi on Wednesday, Chairperson Basnet said that YouTube should be managed.

He said that any YouTube channel that does not go through the procedure by registering YouTube media in the Information Department does not fall under the definition of media. Chairperson Basnet said that anyone who does not follow the code of ethics is not a journalist.

“If a registered journalist goes through the procedure and follows the code of conduct, we welcome them,” he said. We take action against those who misbehave. We have also brought some of them under the ambit of action. ‘

He said that after bringing four YouTubers under the ambit of action, some people have come in contact saying that they will go through the process and work in a systematic manner. A team including the chairperson of the Press Council has reached the far west to monitor the media.
