KATHMANDU: DEC. 8 – The 19th Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) is set to take place from December 9 to December 13.

According to the organizers, the festival will feature more than 60 films from 28 nations, spanning documentary, fiction, experimental, short films, and animation. This time, the film is being prepared for online and direct distribution via two mixed media platforms.

The short film ‘Dream Mountain’ will be screened at the opening ceremony of the festival titled ‘Jalbayu Karma’. The festival will feature short films under ‘Green Growth-Green Recovery’, ‘TikTok Challenge’ under ‘Call to Action’ and some films under Nepal Panorama. Swiss journalist and mountaineer Mario Kassel, Swiss journalist and filmmaker Caroline Fink and actor and director Anup Baral are on the jury.

These are some of the short films that will be screened at the festival

Jiudo Modo (The Living Cops)

The short film ‘Jiudo Modo’ directed by Durga Bahadur Karki is being shown in the 19th edition of KIMFF. The film is shot in the Darchula district and is 12 minutes long.

In the movie, an old woman is making a living with stones. She has a goat in the name of property and friend. She seems worried about her grandson, who set out from Upper Patan to find Yarsagumba. But the villagers tell her that her grandson has died. She wants to see her grandson’s face for the last time. However, the villagers prevent her from attending the funeral.

Atterpian Atrium (DryRefugee)

The film, directed by Ruben Crespo, is an American film. This 5-minute short film is reminiscent of Michael’s good time as a prisoner when the world came to a standstill due to the coronavirus that spread around the world.

When Glacier Go

The movie ‘When Glacier Go’, directed by American director Corey Robinson. Dhe is a remote village in the Mustang region of Nepal which is one of the most affected areas by climate change. Lack of water in the glaciers has forced locals to flee their homes. The Gurung family has also paved its way for the future generation. The story is told by Corey in a 17-minute movie.

‘Agua Desgasta Roca’

The Spanish short film Agua Desgasta Roka (Water Wears Rock) is 22 minutes and 21 seconds long. Director Alvaro Crespo tells the story of Alberto Garcia, a climber who has been suffering from multiple sclerosis since the age of 17, using water wears. He seeks a life in sports that helps him to overcome his illness in order to present himself as a worthy person. Despite his physical disability, his goal is to climb the Naranjo de Bulnes (mountain) in Asturias, Spain, which is 2510 meters high. This peak is considered to be one of the most difficult peaks in Europe.

Dream Mountain

The 18-minute short film ‘Dream Mountain’ is a Nepali film shot in Nepal by American director Kyle Rudick. The film seeks to shed light on Pasang Lhamu Sherpa’s struggle with Akita’s motherhood to balancing mountaineering and the pressure to respect his traditional culture. Akita is Nepal’s first female mountaineering instructor. She is also the first Nepali woman to reach Mount K2. “Everyone has the right to pursue their dreams.” This movie has been made on the theme.

Black picks

The 18 minutes and 44 seconds movie ‘Black Picks’ discusses the impact of climate change on Nepal, Asia and the world. The film focuses on the impact of changes in rainfall, along with the effects of melting snow, on Asia’s large population. Using research, photographic evidence, and interviews with experts, it tells the story of why chicks are turning black and why we should be concerned about it.

Migrants

The 8 minutes 17-second short film Migrants tells the story of two polar bears. The film is a French film directed by Hugo KB, Antoine Du Preez, Aubin Kubiak, Lucas Lhermite and Zoe Davies. Due to climate change, two bears are in search of a safe haven. The film tells the story of a group of brown bears found on the road attacking them and trying to have sex with them. The director points out the danger of the polar bears going out in search of habitat.
