Congress convention: Deuba’s dominance in the state
KATHMANDU: DEC. 6 – The state convention is underway under the 14th general convention of the Nepali Congress. The convention has been held in 6 out of 7 states across the country. However, the state convention could not be held in state 2 due to internal disputes of the party. Similarly, candidates close to President Sher Bahadur Deuba have won in three states.
In Gandaki and Lumbini, Ram Chandra Poudel’s faction has won. Deuba-backed Krishna Sitaula group has emerged victorious in State 1. In State 1, Uddhav Thapa won by two votes with the support of the Deuba faction. Thapa got 844 votes and Gururaj Ghimire of the non-establishment party got 842 votes.
Similarly, Poudel’s faction candidate Amar Pun has won in Lumbini. Indra Bahadur Baniya won the post of Bagmati state president.
Baniya got 1085 votes and Jagadishwar Narasimha KC got 927 votes. Bir Bahadur Balayer has been elected as the president of Sudurpaschim, Lalit Jung Shahi in Karnali and Shukra Raj Sharma as the president of Gandaki.
In State 2, it is still unclear when the convention will be held. Analyzing the election results of the six state conventions so far, the establishment side in Congress has been seen to be strong. The other side of the establishment is seen as weak.
The victory of the Establishment Group in 4 out of 6 states will have a significant significance in the upcoming general convention as well. It is estimated that Prime Minister and party president Deuba, who wants to be re-elected as the party president, will have to bear the consequences.
