Suspected death of a prisoner in Morang Prison
BIRATNAGAR: NOV. 11 – A ‘suspicious’ inmate of Morang District Jail has died. Narayan Thapa, 43, who was serving his sentence in a rape case, died at the jail. Thapa is a prisoner of protest when he brought Abhishek Giri from Kathmandu to Morang on Nov 2.
Ram Prasad Pokharel, acting jailor at the district jail in Morang, said that Thapa, who had already served six years in prison in the rape case, had been taken to Koshi Hospital after suffering from stomach ache and difficulty in breathing.
He said that the doctor declared Thapa dead as soon as he reached the hospital. Thapa of Itahari in Morang was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The brawl took place inside the jail on Tuesday. Six people were injured in the brawl. After the brawl, the prison administration has transferred 14 inmates, including Kiran Gurung, a guard against Giri.
Six people were also injured in the transfer but Thapa was not transferred. Immediately after the transfer of the guard, the prison administration had given the responsibility of the guard to Giri’s aide Karthik Kamat. Karthik was involved in the brawl. Thapa died two days after the prison administration gave him the job of the guard. Prison sources say Thapa’s death was suspicious.
