KATHMANDU: NOV. 11 – The United States has demanded the release of Zhang Zhan, a Chinese citizen journalist who posted material on social media and online about the widespread of COVID-19 in China’s Wuhan province in early 2020.
She arrived in Wuhan in February 2020 to do on-site reporting. Zhang, 38, was arrested by China and sentenced to four years in prison, the BBC reported. She was sentenced last May.
Lately, she has been on a hunger strike in jail. The United States has demanded her release, citing his deteriorating health. US State Department spokeswoman Ned Price made the request.
According to the BBC, Zhang, a law student who has made a name for himself as a human rights activist in China, was arrested a few years ago in the name of supporting Hong Kong’s independence movement.
