From today, census across the country
KATHMANDU: NOV. 11 – The main census of the 12th series is being started today under the national census conducted every 10 years. According to the Central Statistics Office, the census will continue till Nov. 25.
In the first phase of the census, the houses and households have already been listed. The enumerator will collect the details of all the persons within 15 days after reaching all the houses listed and even missing for any reason. For this, 40,000 enumerators and 8,500 supervisors have been mobilized.
Nabin Lal Shrestha, director-general of the department, said that various census coordination and facilitation committees have been formed from the center to the ward level to make the census successful. According to him, 77 district census offices, including census offices, and 349 local census offices have been set up in seven states to conduct the census.
There are 80 questions in the census form. It takes an average of 20 minutes for a family to fill in the answer. In this process, basic economic, social, service, facilities, infrastructure and disaster situation information will be collected from 6 thousand 743 wards across the country and a community questionnaire form will be filled and real information of the entire ward will be obtained from it.
According to Director General Shrestha, the census will be conducted in Kalapani, Lipulek and Limpiyadhura areas through diplomatic channels with India through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
These are the main questions to be asked in the census
This is different from the previous census as it is the first census to be conducted after the country has gone to the federal structure. The demographic statement contains questions about the family’s personal details. Educational details of family members and details of reproductive interest are included in the main questionnaire.
Similarly, the community questionnaire includes social and infrastructure services, economic infrastructure services, disaster risk status, details of natural disasters and catastrophic damage, damage to wildlife and wildlife, habitat of endangered species, settlement of marginalized castes, mother-tongue speakers, service facilities. Details are collected from the questionnaire in this section. The details in the questionnaire of this section will be recorded by the ward chairperson or ward secretary. In addition, the house and household listing form has to be filled.
In the previous census, the family details were done in all the houses and the complete details were done randomly, but this time the complete details of all the households will be collected. Although the census will be conducted in the Kathmandu Valley through tablets, in other parts of the country the census will be conducted by filling up a physical form. The census is set to end on Nov. 25.
