KATHMANDU: NOV. 9 – The term of one-third of the members, including National Assembly Vice-Chairperson Shashikala Dahal, is coming to an end on March 5. Among those who have completed their term are the chairpersons of the thematic committees.

Thematic chairpersons Tara Devi Bhatta, Ram Narayan Bidari and Parashuram Meghi Gurung are also among those who have completed their four-year term. The term of office of 20 MPs including him is coming to an end at once.

Other members who have completed their term include Agam Prasad Bantawa Rai, Udaya Sharma Poudel, Kabita Bogati, Khim Kumar BK, Chakra Prasad Snehi, Jeevan Budha, Drugnarayan Pandey, Thagendra Prakash Puri, Tara Devi Bhatta, Dinanath Sharma, Nanakala Ojha, Radheshyam Adhikari, Ram Lakhan Chamar, Shantikumari Adhikari and Sher Bahadur Kunwar.

The term of office of 20 members, including 8 from the CPN (UML), 4 from the CPN (Unified Socialist), 4 from the CPN (Maoist Center) and 3 from the Nepali Congress, is coming to an end on March 5.

The four-year term of the members is coming to an end due to the round of voting held on June 18, 2018.

The 59-member National Assembly, the upper house, has a term of six years. The vacancies will now be filled by by-elections. For which the Election Commission will hold the election.

The parties in the ruling coalition have already agreed to run in the by-elections. The agreement was reached at a meeting of the five-party alliance held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Monday.

In the election of National Assembly members, there are members of the State Assembly, village chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, and municipal chiefs and deputy chief voters. The government has already announced the date of elections in the near future for the vacant posts of one-third of the members with the consent of the political parties.

There is a legally binding provision that members must be elected at least 35 days before the end of their term. Accordingly, the Election Commission will fix the election date.
