DAMAULI: NOV. 5 – Sharmila BK, a journalist with Chhimkeshwori FM at Dumre Bazar in Bandipur Rural Municipality-1 has opted for professional pig farming.

Along with a media career, BK is doing pig farming expecting good income from pig farming.

In the past years, BK reared less than five pigs for selling meat but she switched to rearing piglets recently after failing to make a good income from meat.

BK said that she makes around Rs 600,000 in a year from the piglets borne by three pigs. A pig gives birth to as high as 15 piglets every six months.

Journalist BK’s husband Bijay too takes care of their business and supports Sharmila in rearing the pigs.

Currently, she has reared six pigs and 24 piglets ready for sale.

“Per piglet is sold for Rs 6,500 after 45 days of its birth. And, there is no problem for the market for the pig,” according to BK.

She was of the view that pig farming is easier and cost-effective business compared to others which led her to begin this professionally.

The Rural Municipality has also given some grants for improving pigsty to lure more locals to this business.
