Bagmati CM Astalaxmi Shakya to seek the vote of confidence today
KATHMANDU: OCT. 10 – Bagmati Chief Minister Astalaxmi Shakya is taking a vote of confidence today. After the UML split and fell into the minority vote, the Shakya-led government has to take a vote of confidence from the state assembly.
A meeting of the state assembly has been called for that at 3 pm. The government was in the minority after 13 UML state assembly members elected Madhav Kumar Nepal-led CPN (Unified Socialist). Chief Minister Shakya, who came to power from a single majority of the UML on August 18, is unlikely to get a vote of confidence in parliament. Shakya needs 55 MPs to save the government in Bagmati, which has 109 members. But Shakya, who became the chief minister by a majority of 56 MPs, currently has only 43 MPs.
UML is claiming to get a vote of confidence in the parliament in partnership with other parties, but even if it joins other smaller parties outside the alliance, the required votes for Chief Minister Shakya will not be enough. The five-party alliance at the center has four components in Bagmati. There are 23 MPs from the CPN (Maoist Center), 22 from the Nepali Congress, 13 from the CPN (Unified Socialist) and 60 from the JSP.
The UML, which has 43 MPs, will not be able to get the required number of votes even if it cooperates with the Bibeksheel Sajha Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and Nepal Mazdoor Kisan Party (NCP). Bibeksheel has three MPs in the parliament and RPP and NCP have two MPs each. Adding all these together, UML has only 50 votes. Which is insufficient to sustain the state government.
