NEW DELHI: SEPT. 25 – Three labourers were killed after inhaling toxic gas while they entered a sewage tank to clean it in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police said Saturday.

The deaths took place Friday evening at Kachni village of Singrauli district about 650 km east of Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the trio had inhaled the toxic gas and fell unconscious inside it,” a police official in Singrauli said.

According to officials, the tank was being repaired and a private contractor had hired the labourers for the work.

Reports said the contractor has fled from the spot after the incident and the police are looking for him.

The workers had entered the tank without taking precautions or wearing proper gear.

The police have registered a case against the contractor and ordered an investigation into the deaths.
