KATHMANDU: SEPT. 16 – Sri Lankan cricket is known around the world as a country that has made great strides in a short period of time. Lately, Sri Lanka has been known in world cricket for its bowling by Lasith Malinga. He made his mark in the world of cricket through bowling.
Announcing his retirement from the short format of cricket on Tuesday, cricket fans have thanked him for his contribution to cricket. Malinga’s cricket career has officially come to an end with the announcement of his retirement from T20 Internationals. He announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2011 and ODI cricket in 2019. However, he has since played international cricket for Sri Lanka.
Malinga has taken 546 wickets for Sri Lanka in all three formats of cricket. He has taken 101 wickets in 30 Tests and 338 wickets in 226 ODIs. He has also taken a total of 390 wickets in T20 (international and domestic).
Most successful in T20
Malinga is the fourth most successful bowler in the T20 format. He took 107 wickets at an average of 20.79 in 84 T20 games. However, his record is about to be found by Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh. Shakib has taken 106 wickets in 88 games.
Malinga is also the highest wicket-taker in the world’s most popular T20 franchise IPL. Playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he has taken 170 wickets in IPL.
Rare record
Malinga is one of the bowlers in the world who has taken 4 wickets in 4 consecutive balls in both ODI and T20 internationals. He achieved this feat in the ODI World Cup against South Africa in 2007 and in the T20 against New Zealand in 2017, he made history by taking 4 wickets in 4 consecutive balls.
